Fifth Sunday of Easter

You are invited to pray the following prayer for the presence of the Holy Spirit:

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the Hearts of Your faithful and kindle in us the Fire of

Your love. Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be recreated-And You will

renew the face of the earth.

O God, Who did instruct the hearts of Your faithful people by the Light of

Your Holy Spirit, grant that by the same Spirit we may be truly wise and ever

rejoice in His consolation. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our prayer today is that this special time of worship will be a time when you truly

feel closer to God and that through the experience of both Word and Sacrament

you will come into the presence of the saving love of Jesus Christ.

BE STILL AND KNOW…

BEFORE THE LITURGY, IN SILENCE, TALK TO GOD

DURING THE LITURGY, LET GOD SPEAK TO YOU

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known,

Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King,

almighty God and Father,

we worship you, we give you thanks,

we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on us;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father:

receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Lord be with you

And also with you

Let us pray:

Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Please be seated for the reading of God’s word

The first reading is from the book of Acts 7:55-60

But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand. And he told them, “Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand!”

Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at him and dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.

As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” He fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died.

Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16

1 In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge;

let me never be put to shame; *

deliver me in your righteousness.

2 Incline your ear to me; *

make haste to deliver me.

3 Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,

for you are my crag and my stronghold; *

for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.

4 Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, *

for you are my tower of strength.

5 Into your hands I commend my spirit, *

for you have redeemed me,

O Lord, O God of truth.

15 My times are in your hand; *

rescue me from the hand of my enemies,

and from those who persecute me.

16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, *

and in your loving‑kindness save me.”

The second reading is from 1 Peter 2:2-10

Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.

You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor.

And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. As the Scriptures say,

“I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem,

chosen for great honor,

and anyone who trusts in him

will never be disgraced.”

Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him,

“The stone that the builders rejected

has now become the cornerstone.”

And,

“He is the stone that makes people stumble,

the rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

“Once you had no identity as a people;

now you are God’s people.

Once you received no mercy;

now you have received God’s mercy.”

The Lord be with you

And also with you

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 14:1-14.

Glory to you Lord Christ

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.”

“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.”

Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do.

“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord.

People : Praise to you Lord Christ

The Homily : The Reverend Donna Steckline

A moment of silent reflection follows…

As the family of God, together let us profess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed

(You’re invited to stand) BCP p.358

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

WHEN GOD CALLS YOU, IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU—IT’S ABOUT HIM.

When God is with you, you are qualified for your call. When God calls us to go, He is with us, and He is all we need. This is something that we all need to keep in mind as we say farewell to Mother Donna, Kevin, and family. The Steckline’s will certainly be missed. They have devoted over 27 years to Christ Church Gilbertsville. The Holy Spirit led Mother Donna to the priesthood. We have had been blessed to a front row seat at seeing Mother Donna grow from a lay person into our spiritual leader. Kevin has served in many capacities at Christ Church from Vestry Member to providing loving tender care to God’s church through the building and grounds committee.

The Stecklines are answering the call that they received from God to relocate. One could say that they leave big shoes to fill and that Christ Church faces many tough challenges ahead. Again, we must focus on that “When God calls us to go, He is with us, and He is all we need”. On more than one Sunday morning, Mother Donna’s sermon focused on the truth that “The Church” is more than one person or building. We ALL are the church and must do our part as the family of God. Right now, we are not able to worship together due to the pandemic and it has made it difficult. I encourage you to reach out to fellow parishioners, a phone call, text, email or note in the mail can brighten someone’s day. And most importantly pray, God will provide. We are not alone; he is with us.

I know that I am not alone in feeling sad that we are unable to give the Stecklines the sendoff that us Episcopalians are so well known for. For now, I encourage you to drop them a line at their new address: 907 McElwee Rd. Rockbridge Baths VA 24473-2037.

Yes, we do face challenges, but remember: God was—and is and always will be—fully qualified. God is wise enough. Righteous enough. Brave enough. Be open to hear his words and plans for Christ Church Gilbertsville.

For his sake,

Gail Ashley
